There were no future major league stars like Leiter on the hill that day, and the protagonists fanned a mere 33 batters between them. Yet virtually no one knows about the pitching duel that took place nearly 40 years ago, on to be exact, save those on the diamond or in the stands that Saturday afternoon behind Freehold Township High School. The events of Aprank among the most iconic in Jersey Shore baseball history, as Central’s Al Leiter and Wall’s John Spinapont battled through 13 scoreless innings, combining to strike out 50 batters before rain forced the timeless showdown into the record books as a draw.
